As Lee Cronbach notes, when validity was defined as the degree to which a test measures what it purports to measure, the focus was on the test’s truthfulness—did it do what it said it would?

Theory, in this case, is positioned as intellectual, academic work, often seen as separate from—and in fact opposite from—practice. In the traditional binary relationship between theory and practice—or thought and action—theory has occupied the privileged position, especially in the university where attention to practice has been seen as “too vocational,” the kiss of death in the academy (Argyris and Schön 1981, 3). Formal theory is a mainstay in the contemporary academy, with scholars often identified by their theoretical position.

In the traditional binary relationship between theory and practice—or thought and action—theory has occupied the privileged position, especially in the university where attention to practice has been seen as “too vocational,” the kiss of death in the academy (Argyris and Schön 1981, 3).
